I want a website, where do I start?

There are a few things to consider when you are new to Web Design. Here is a checklist to help you decide exactly what is required when first starting out.

a new website, where to start

1. Decide in its purpose.

There is no point in having a website if there is no purpose to it. First you must decide on exactly what you want from your website, some typical examples might include:

2. Decide what you really need in your website.

Take into account your budget requirements. This is important as you may be spending on functionality you don't require for your specific business. Extra features can always be added later, as and when required. See some examples of pages you could have.

3. Your Website address

Have an idea on what kind of website addresses you would like for your business. Usually the name of your business is appropriate. 'e.g www.yourbusiness.co.uk'. Try to keep it simple and memorable. Don't forget you will also be using it on all your print media, business cards etc.

4. A place for your website to live

Make sure you have hosting for your website, this will involve a monthly (or yearly) fee to keep your website up and running online. Most packages on JMC Website Design include this.

5. Choose website content and features

Get in touch for a quote. Make a note of your exact requirements. What should you have on your website? The website packages are set out as a guide, they can be customised to fit your business needs.

6. Review the contract and work involved

You will be sent a contract explaining the full extent of work involved, along with terms and conditions of service. At this point you are under no obligation. Feel free to raise any issues you have with the contract or its terms and conditions. If you require more details (such as timescales) please make a note of this.

7. Sign off contract

Once the contract is signed and approved, work will commence according to the contract. Please note a 40% deposit is also required prior to any commencement of work. Don't forget to send appropriate content such as body copy, logos and images!
